Cerebral Palsy as a Result of Birth Injury

Cerebral Palsy is a permanent, non-progressive neurological disorder caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls muscle tone and movement. While a variety of traumatic injuries or infections can cause cerebral palsy, some cases result from difficulties giving birth or by medical staff errors made during delivery.

Brain damage caused during birthing is often a result of oxygen deprivation. Some of the reasons an infant may be deprived of oxygen at birth are:
  • A crimped umbilical cord or problems with the placenta in utero or during birth
  • Prolapsed umbilical cord (wrapped around baby’s neck)
  • Shoulder dystocia preventing the infant from moving through the birth canal
  • Asphyxia neonatorum after delivery (baby isn’t breathing)
  • Brachial plexus palsy with a paralyzed diaphragm, inability to take a full breath
  • Perinatal stroke (stroke before, during or shortly after delivery)
  • Head bleeding
  • Seizures
  • Over-use of vacuum during delivery
  • Not performing cesarean section when indicated
  • Improper, or no response to infant’s or mother’s symptoms of distress.
  • Failure to diagnose diseases that are potential causes of brain damage (in the mother or the infant.)

Stroke damages the brain by blocking circulation to nearby cells.

Head bleeding causes cell damage when blood breaks down in direct contact with brain tissue.

The inability to breathe effectively after birth requires immediate respiratory support and additional oxygen. Every second it is delayed increases the risk of permanent damage or death.

It is the physician’s duty to evaluate the need for oxygen delivery. In many cases, oxygen deprivation is avoidable.
