Accutane

Accutane is a prescription drug used to treat patients with resistant nodular cystic acne. Accutane was developed by Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. and was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1982.

Accutane helps with severe acne by reducing the amount of oil the oil glands in the skin release. Accutane also helps the skin to quickly renew itself, thus reducing the signs and painful symptoms of acne.

Accutane causes several serious reactions. Doctors are recommended to monitor patients who are taking this potentially dangerous drug.  Patients may need to undergo frequent blood tests to monitor the liver for any damage.

Patients who are taking Accutane should not donate blood and should wait at least 30 days before donating. Because Accutane is a form of vitamin A, patients should not take any vitamin supplement that contains vitamin A.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use Accutane. Severe birth defects, physical birth defects, mental retardation, and fetal death may result if a woman is pregnant or becomes pregnant while taking Accutane. Any women of childbearing age should consult her physician and discuss the risks before taking Accutane.

Accutane can potentially cause psychological effects including psychosis, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Over 240 suicides have been linked to taking Accutane.

It is widely thought that Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. knew about these potential side effects before introducing the drug on the market. They allegedly hid relevant data to avoid admittance of dangerous side effects. There have been over twenty modifications to Accutane’s label since the introduction of the medication due to the emersion of side effects.
