Fentanyl
Fentanyl is a patch that is placed on the skin to help with chronic pain management in patients who require constant pain relief. Fentanyl is a narcotic and is only used for patients whose pain cannot be managed with oral pain medications that are less powerful. Fentanyl binds to the body’s natural pain relievers in the nervous system and brain to help alleviate chronic pain.
Fentanyl patches are sold as Duragesic and are manufactured by PriCara. The patches are also sold generically as fentanyl and manufactured by Sandoz, Inc. Fentanyl patches were recalled on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. The patches subject to recall are all 25-microgram-per-hour patches that expire on or before December 2009.
The Fentanyl Flaw
Fentanyl is considered a dangerous drug because of its visibly noticeable flaw. Many of the patches have a cut in the lining that stores the drug in a gel form. This cut promotes seeping of the drug onto the patient’s skin. Contact with this dangerous drug can cause the patient to have difficulty breathing and puts the patient at risk of having a fatal overdose of the drug.
