Reglan
Reglan is a medication that is prescribed to treat gastrointestinal difficulties and other conditions of the intestines and stomach such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Reglan is prescribed to both children and adults. Reglan is used to reduce nausea and vomiting as well as to treat other conditions including:
- Gastroparesis
- Heartburn
- Reflux
- Loss of appetite
- The feeling of prolonged fullness
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved Reglan for short-term use. It is strongly suggested that Reglan only be used for no more than three months at a time and only after other more conservative treatments have been tried. Unfortunately, Reglan has been prescribed to patients for long-term use that may extend to several years.
Risks of Reglan
Reglan can be classified as a dangerous drug because patients who have taken Reglan for longer than one year may develop tardive dyskinesia. This condition can develop sooner than one year and is more likely to develop in children and infants. The duration of use and the strength of Reglan affect the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia.
Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia are:
- Rapid blinking
- Puckering or pursing of the lips
- Smacking of the lips
- Grimacing
- Protrusion of the tongue
- Involuntary movements of the limbs
Tardive dyskinesia can also negatively affect one’s ability to walk, talk, swallow, or breathe. This condition is characterized by rapid movements of the limbs, trunk, and shoulders that are involuntary.
If you or a loved one has suffered any of the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, you should be seen by your physician immediately. You may be entitled to compensation for your suffering.
