Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a serious and life-threatening medical condition that is the result of an allergic reaction to some dangerous drugs. The onset of a bacterial infection may cause SJS; however, many cases of SJS have no known cause. Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) is another form of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and is also caused by a reaction to taking prescription or over the counter drugs.
Some of the medications that have been reported to be associated with SJS and TEN include:
- Anibiotics such as penicillian
- Over the counter pain relievers such as Children’s Motrin, Motrin, and Ibuprofin
- Prescription pain relievers such as Celebrx, Bextra, and Daypro
What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a dangerous and potentially deadly skin condition. SJS affects the skin and causes death of the skin cells that leads to the separation of the epidermis from the dermis.
SJS more commonly affects older people and those with AIDS. Children are less likely to develop SJS and the reason for this is most likely because children do not take as much of the dangerous drugs that cause the condition or take them as often as older people. The most common cause of SJS is the reaction to dangerous drugs.
Receiving treatment as soon as possible for SJS will help limit the seriousness of the condition. Early treatment may help prevent any secondary infections from occurring. Knowing the symptoms of SJS and TEN will help friends and family notice the condition and get loved ones the medical attention needed.
The symptoms of SJS and TEN are:
- Sore throat
- Extreme pain and body aches
- Ulcers in the lips, mouth, and genital areas
- Round lesions on the face, arms, truck, legs, and feet
