Baxter Infusion Pump Recall
It was announced late last month that Baxter International is recalling its Colleague infusion pumps from the U.S. market due to problems including software errors and battery failures. The Food and Drug Administration states that the defective Baxter infusion pumps have been linked to over 56,000 reported injuries and deaths, as well as product malfunctions, between 2005 and 2009.
Infusion pumps are used in hospitals to give patients nutrients that are in comas, blood thinning drugs to heart patients, and chemotherapy to cancer patients.
The American subsidiary, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, has been under a “consent decree” with the FDA since June 2006. This decree allowed the agency to require a recall of the defective infusion pumps.
Baxter says that there are just under 200,000 of these defective infusion pumps still in use at hospitals and other medical facilities. They also claim that the Colleague infusion pumps have not been sold to new customers since 2005 and are being phased out.
The FDA rejected the phase-out plan on April 30 as “unacceptable” that would have allowed the Baxter infusion pump to stay in use until 2013, and ordered the company to recall the defective product. Baxter has offered to replace the Colleague infusion pumps with Sigma Spectrum infusion pumps.
