You may have seen ads for the birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin in magazines or on television. However, since being marketed in the US in 2001, both Yaz and Yasmin have been linked to a number of serious side effects. Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare, Yaz and Yasmin are virtually the same kind of birth control pill except that they differ in their form of estrogen called ethinylestradiol. They also contain a progestin called drospirenone, as well as contain the same kind of hormones used in birth control pills since the 1970s.

Yaz/Yasmin Adverse Side Effects

The adverse side effects of Yaz and Yasmin that have been reported include:

• Pulmonary embolism
• Pancreatitis
• Blood clots
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• Stroke

The progestin drospirenone has been prescribed to treat bloating and water retention in women who suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Drospirenone has been known to cause dehydration in the body through the loss of fluids. This can lead to blood clots and death.

In addition to the several side effects caused by Yaz and Yasmin, there have been as many as 50 deaths associated with the birth control pill since 2004. These deaths were caused by blood clots in the heart and lungs, cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, and stroke. Women as young as 17 years old have died. While these were reported to the Food and Drug Administration, there has not been a recall announced. In fact, many magazines are still publishing full page ads for Yaz and Yasmin.
